I’m thinking about doing a ba in english. I was taking a visual arts degree and I made it to 4th year. I ended up dropping out of art school because the academics were so stressful in that the art academics were so circular and complicated. I excelled in the creative hands on stuff.
I really want to teach english, I love to read and I am creative. I’m thinking that an english degree would be best.
Any similar experiences would help me make a good choice
bye.
I think they are more alike than different. Your educational experience depends more on your instructors than the topic itself. "Circular and complicated" sort of describes my experience in English (my 2nd Bachelor’s degree). There are creative moments in the study of English but they can be extinguished by the mind-numbing blandness of the basics and abusive professors.
I think you need to knuckle down and finish what you start. By the time I finished college I wanted to quit many times. I only made it through by looking back on my years of effort and not wanting to squander them. I knew I’d have the choice to throw it away after I graduated, if I was still feeling self-destructive.

My world history teacher will up soemones grade if they answer this question….
If Latin is a romantic language and English is a dramatic one, how did we get Latin roots in English?
English is a Germanic language, not "dramatic." Latin is the ancestor of the Romance (not "romantic") languages but is not one itself. (The Romance languages include French, Spanish, Italian, and several others.)
English has a large stock of words of Latin origin for several reasons. First, the area that is now England was part of the Roman Empire for almost 400 years. No other country that speaks a Germanic language was under Roman rule. Although the Romans withdrew from Britain (about A. A. 409) before the Anglo-Saxons migrated there (c449), the Roman place-names remained.
Then, England was the first Germanic-speaking area to become Christian. Missionaries arrived from Rome in A. D. 597, and the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms converted within a few generations. Of course Latin was the language of the Church, so quite a few Latin words came into the language at that time.
Finally, in 1066 English was conqureed by the Normans, who spoke French and made it the official language of the country through most of the Middle Ages. When English re-emerged as a literary language, it had absorbed a great deal of French–a Romance language. (This last fact is probably the one your teacher is fishing for.)

Philippines still uses English as an official language but is much poorer than Malaysia which eliminated it. And many Filipinos still justify that English makes them have an advantage when it does not give them any advantage whatsoever.
To say that Filipinos are favored in US or Canada as maids is an insult because if the Philippines was rich they wouldnt have to work overseas in the first place, and secondly there is nothing proud in being a domestic helper or maid that is the lowest of low jobs.
The Filipinos justify that English is an advantage but fluency on English language doesn’t mean that they will be better than other nationalities or expected to be richer compare to non speaking English country it doesn’t work that way you have to understand how the economy works then you will find the answer. The justification of the Filipinos for having an advantage is referring to the opportunity to work outside the country. A communication tools to speak & understand the English language that will help them for a greener pasture and capacity to find a job related to their skills or professions the currency conversion will give them an advantage in terms of monetary gain . This is an individual endeavour means the micro that can be turn into macro.

I live in Canada and here, even if you have a university degree from another country, it can be pretty hard for an immigrant to get a good job if they are not fluent in English. Immigrants usually work in fast food, factories, are janitors, etc.
Is it the same in Finland? English is a pretty wide spread language, so would an English speaking person with limited Finnish be able to find a decent job?
Don’t generalize too much. Everything in life is not written on stone in advance and it’s all about what skills you posses. If you don’t believe in your abilities on job hunt and in yourself then nobody else will do that for you and nobody else will have trust on you. It’s simple and evil as that.
Nevertheless it’s very important to have faith in oneself, it’s not enough if there’s no jobs around or too many applicants, too much education, rising academic unemployment levels. It’s all reality in Finland currently and we’re going to see rising unemployment rates this year and later on.
New IKEA store opened in Tampere and they currently are looking for staff. They received well over 8000 applications and they only have about 200 positions open. You could just count the probability of getting any of those jobs.
Jobs that are on public sector may be more stable but they’re not really that easy to get. I say you should consider any english speaking countries instead. It’s really a global thing, immigrants may not become first unless they have unbeatable experience, skills. But hey even the native Finns have the same problems.

The actual title is "The spread of English language in the 19th and 20th Centuries." How did it spread and why? Thank you.
It actually spead long before the 19th century. Since the 14th, england has been trading, exploring and conquering lands, and taking the language with them.

Ok Im hispanic and I watched that one episode of Scrubs where Carla dreams in English and starts worrying that she has lost her heritage or culture or whatever its called. When i was watching it i realized that now im dreaming in english and im not sure when i started.
I live in a spanish-speaking country and I’ve never gone abroad, and I’ve never talked to somebody that speaks English as their mother tongue. Anyway, I once had one of those. The whole dream was in English, however, it just happened once, now I just keep dreaming in Spanish. Strange question though.
